Flower Pot Pin Cushion

As you may or may not know, I recently got an early Christmas present...a sewing machine! I'm pretty pumped. (Like a lot!) A few days ago I went to the store to pick up a few things I needed (like thread and pins, etc.). I just wanted the bare essentials, but while I was there thought I'd look to see if they had any pin cushions. Well...they did...but only tomatoes. Can someone please tell me why all standard pin cushions look like tomatoes and where on earth this started? My mom has had a tomato for as long as I can remember, so I know this isn't some recent trend where tomatoes are "in" like owls. (Disregard the bit about owls if you have no idea why animals are a part of this discussion.)

Anyway, I didn't want to buy a pin cushion just to have one, I wanted to buy one I really, really liked. That's pretty much how I decide all purchases...if I don't love it, I don't buy it. I guess you could say I'm not really loving the tomatoes right now.

So I made my own instead. Best part is I only had to buy a small pot--everything else I already had. So, for 98 cents, I have a very custom pin cushion that works marvelously, I might add.

What you need:

• 3-inch clay pot (98 cents at Home Depot)
• Fabric (mine was 7"x7")
• Ribbon (optional...this is for decoration, so decorate yours with whatever suits your taste)
• Polyfill....this is where mine goes another direction. I didn't happen to have polyfill, so I improvised with two mateless socks, a rubberband and a piece of felt (to smooth over any bumps in the socks)
• Glue gun
• Paint (again, optional...this is for your pot if you don't like the clay look)

The pictures are pretty much self-explanatory from here, just know that I'm wrapping one sock within another, gluing, wrapping, gluing and wrapping...then gluing some more.
